The Slow Symposium consists of a series of individual events that are being held continuously since 2023. The idea arose from our Focus lecture series in winter 2017. In view of current discussions on gender justice, mechanisms of oppression and discrimination and intersectionality, we want to reflect and discuss together with guests: Who is supported within institutions such as art and music colleges and why? How do we react to this? Together with other collectives and experts from inside and outside Berlin we reflect, think ahead, learn from each other, and form alliances.

A personal reaction to the Gather Up Symposium
by Sam Aguirre, photographer of the symposium

Growing up, the idea of becoming an artist felt more like a fantasy than a real possibility. Music, in particular, seemed reserved for those born into artistic families or for the fearless ones who risked everything despite the odds. I took the safer route, but those who didn’t—the ones who embraced the struggle—became the loudest voices, turning their music into a force that screams about injustice, rage, and resilience just as much as it sings about joy and passion.

Crafting Talismans of Sound An Artist Talk-Workshop in Intention, Resonance, and Presence With Kei Watanabe

slow symposium

How do we translate wishes, grief, and presence into sound? This presentation explores the
creation of sound talismans—objects or compositions imbued with personal intention, ritual,
and sonic resonance. Drawing from concepts of mapping vs. improvisation, self-soothing
through loops, and deep listening, participants will engage with sound as both a medium of
transformation and a refuge.

Gather collective invites you to take part in our symposium, a space for coming together and sharing knowledge in alternative ways. We aim to create an inclusive space that values aliveness and curiosity, dedicated to non-hierarchical feminist approaches to teaching, learning and artistic practice. Through moving, sounding, thinking and listening together, we aim to push back on the barriers often arising within academic knowledge production. We think about how to provide a space that leaves room for individual needs, intuitive action and disruptive practices. Is the university only a place to study, and is it the only place to study? What kind of knowledge is considered valuable and deserving of space and protection?

Crafting Talismans of Sound An Artist Talk-Workshop in Intention, Resonance, and Presence With Kei Watanabe

How do we translate wishes, grief, and presence into sound? This presentation explores the creation of sound talismans—objects or compositions imbued with personal intention, ritual, and sonic resonance. Drawing from concepts of mapping vs. improvisation, self-soothing through loops, and deep listening, participants will engage with sound as both a medium of transformation and a refuge. Through guided reflection, participants will ask: ● What is a sincere wish you hold? ● What can you offer? ● How do you navigate doubt, presence, and trust in the creative process? Using accessible tools, voice, and found objects, we will explore ways to craft meaningful sonic expressions. No prior musical experience is required—only a willingness to listen, experiment, and engage with the unknown. Open to everyone Registration until March 29th at gather@udk-berlin.de Kei Watanabe - PETAL (she/they) is a Sri Lankan-Japanese sound artist based in Berlin. Their practice incorporates found objects, acoustic instruments, voice, and loops, with a strong focus on exploring the tension between stillness and chaos within inner landscapes. Central themes in their work include memory, prayer, and the interplay of despair and hope. Kei Watanabe is also a random artist who hates writing these.
